「デンスケ」を知っているのは、たぶん60歳以上の方。Sonyから発売されていた持ち運べる録音機器の名称で、初号機は昭和30年代からあったらしいのですが、一般向けに使われるようになったのは1973年に発売されたカセットテープを利用した「カセットデンスケ」から。持ち運べると言っても大きさは30×20×10cmくらいあって、A4サイズの雑誌10冊分くらいでした。
多分、相当高価な物だったと思いますが、友人にこれを持ってコンサート会場に乗り込む豪傑がいました。今だとスマートフォン一つあれば、もっと楽に録音が出来たりしますが、基本的にコンサートでのこういう行為は著作権上はほとんどが違法行為です。
ところが、こういう猛者が日本に限らず世界中に大勢いるわけで、彼らが密かに録音した音源がマニアの間でやり取りされると言うのは、録音技術の進歩とともにずっと昔から「普通」に行われていたわけです。特定の人と人の間だけで交換されたりしているうちはまだよかったのですが、それをレコード盤に記録して販売する人が登場するに至って、レコード会社も黙っていられなくなりました。
ボブ・ディランは、そのような非公式音源のターゲットとして、最も早くから狙われてきたアーティストです。客席から録音された音質の良くないライブ音源などは当たり前で、ライブの時に使われる音響機器から直接出力された公式盤並みの高音質のものもあります。さらにスタジオでの収録された音源や仲間内で記録用に簡易録音したものがリハーサルなども含めて流出したりもします。
本来、アーティストが聴いてもらいたいと思って公にするものではないので、レコード会社もそんなニーズはマニア以外にはないだろうと思っていたら、1985年に発売した未公開音源をたくさん詰め込んだ「Biograph」が予想外に好評でした。ディランの場合は、同じ曲の別テイクといっても、まったくアレンジが異なっていたり、そもそもアルバムから漏れた未発表の新曲がたくさんあることが、大きな需要になっているのです。
だったら、音質の悪い海賊盤で広まったものも、公式にしっかりとマスタリングして「公式海賊盤」にしてしまえば、非公式の海賊盤を駆逐できるということで「The Bootleg Series」の企画が始まりました。このプロジェクトを管理しているのは、ディランの個人事務所の代表であるジェフ・ローゼンで、海賊盤市場を徹底的に調査し、倉庫に眠っている膨大な資料やテープなどを整理しました。
「The Bootleg Series」の第1弾が登場したのは、1991年3月で、3枚組CD、5枚組レコード、3本組カセットテープで発売されました。CDの3枚がそれぞれVol.1～3となっていて、全58曲中スタジオ・アウトテイクだけで43曲を占めています。後に似たような企画を立ち上げたアーティストはいろいろいますが、基本的に未発表ライブ音源が中心になっていることが多く、スタジオでの余り物の多さはディランが飛びぬけて多い。
ここでは初めての試みということで、デヴューから「Oh Mercy」までの当時のディランの全キャリアを網羅した形になりました。その後のシリーズは、それぞれに設けられたテーマに沿って、CD5枚組前後でまとめられ、その中のベストを選び出したCD2枚組の二つの形態を基本として登場しています。
ちなみにこの年の2月20日、ディランは第33回グラミー賞で「生涯功労賞 (Lifetime Achievement Award)」を受賞しました。当時はアメリカは湾岸戦争に参画していた時期でしたが、ステージに登場したディランは荒々しく「Masters of War」を歌い、その後のスピーチでユダヤ教聖典の格言を用いて「たとえ両親に見捨てられたとしても、神はいつもあなたがやり直すことができると信じてくれている」と語り話題となりました。
